I need to install additional Memory cards. Must I remove all programs from PC first?

I want to go from 512 MB to a full Gig, and the Memory comes in sets to 2. I don't want to install, only to find out that I just wiped everything from the computer.

No you will not have to do anything with your programs or operating system. The danger is in shorting out the memory or something else in the computer so be sure and properly ground yourself. You might want to invest in one of those wrist straps. Also depending on your machine you might want to think about going to 2 GB of RAM as RAM is very cheap now. Reply:No, It's a flat card that fits into a slot on your motherboard, I'm sure you're confuing memory i.e RAM with your harddrive.





To swop memory, all you do is unscrew the case screws, and find the slot for the memory (usually close to the CPU (Big fan)), slot it in there, and if the speeds, match, your A4 away!

Reply:Changing your RAM won't do any damage to your computer. You won't lose any data. The RAM is erased every time you shut your computer off. It's OK. Upgrade!!!
Reply:No, it's not necessary to change anything on your hard drive when you install RAM. Just make sure you get the right RAM for your computer and you install it properly: http://www.crucial.com/

Turn that PC off, pull out your old Ram sticks, and pop the new ones in.





Nothing is stored permanently on Ram, only on your hard drive. Trust me, I'm 2 classes away from my computer science and engineering degree bub.

Oh and leave the PC plugged in, the case will be earthed and you should touch the case to earth yourself before taking the RAM out of the bag.





People seem very keen to unplug the PC and let things discharge, it is much better to have it plugged in and earthed!

Your hard drive is permanent memory,


RAM is temporary or volatile memory.
Reply:Data is stored on the hard disk, not in RAM (except while it is being used).





You don't need to do anything special before swapping the RAM chips out.
Reply:Make sure you shut the computer down - hibernate or standby won't do - then unplug and fit the memory taking appropriate antistatic precautions. Boot up and it should be much faster.

Reply:Your programs and files are on your hard drive. Your memory is separate and used to temporarily store data when you are using your computer. If you remove your RAM and install new RAM it will not affect your programs or files
