can a card be formatted from a computer and be suitable for any camera?
Is the formatting of camera memory cards consistent throughout all similar cards ?
no
it must be formated in the camera
Reply:Yep. SD cards are standard.
Reply:I use the Nikon D70S and I format my 2Gb and 1Gb cards via the pc, no problems, I have done this many times over the last year.
Reply:As long as the camera is compatible with the file system used on the card. I accidentally formatted a 4GB card with FAT32 but the camera could only read FAT file system.
Reply:The card should NEVER be formatted using your computer.
Each camera formats the memory cards using FAT, FAT16 or FAT32 for SD, MMC and CF cards.
xD and Sony Memory Sticks use proprietary formatting schemes and may be damaged by attempting to format them using a PC.
Mac format using the Mac "forked" format ... not compatible with any memory card.
